British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
